Governors

Sodbury Vale Federation – Governor Information.

Horton CEVA and St. John's Mead CEVC Primaries

The governing body provides strategic management to the federated schools through challenge and support, ensuring the schools are accountable for its actions. It is made up of parents, school staff and other people from the local community working in partnership with the schools to ensure that the federation achieves its aims and is supported correctly to do this.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Working together with the Executive Headteacher to set the future direction for the schools and decide how the schools' budgets should be spent.
  • Making decisions collectively on matters such as performance targets, school policies and the Schools' Development Plans.
  • Reviewing progress against the School Development Plan and the schools' budget and objectives.
  • Monitoring the impact that the schools' policies have on pupil outcomes.
  • Acting as a link between parents and the schools and reporting to parents on the schools' achievements.
  • Responding to inspection recommendations.

School governors lead schools, they do not manage them. The day-to-day management of the school is the responsibility of the Executive Headteacher.

The chair or clerk to the governors can be contacted through the school office.

Becoming a Governor

Becoming a Governor

From time to time, governors step down from their position which leaves opportunities for parents or interested members of the local community to take up a governor role.

The governors have a wide range of responsibilities and roles, coming from varied backgrounds and workplace experiences. The role requires commitment, empathy for our Christian values, attendance at monthly meetings, reading of documentation in preparation for meetings and monitoring within the schools. However, it is an extremely satisfying and important role.

We currently have vacancies for Foundation Governors (assigned by the church). If you are interested in becoming a governor, talk to the Chair of Governors who leads the board. When there is a vacancy for a parent governor, all parents will be informed and

you will have a chance to stand for election.

Before you put yourself forward, do talk to your employer. Many employers recognise the role of school governor as useful work experience and may offer paid leave for governor duties.

To contact the Governing Body, please email: admin@stjohnsmead.co.uk - FAO The Chair of Governors.
